Statistics Go To School: Strengthening Statistical Literacy in Tegal Regency

The new academic year has begun for students, and schools are diligently preparing their activities and programs for the year ahead. In response to this, the Tegal Regency Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS) is collaborating with several top high schools in the region to enhance students’ knowledge of data and statistics. This initiative is called “Statistics Go To School,” designed to expand statistical awareness beyond general concepts and into specific sectors, including secondary education.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, a promising start occurred as discussions about this program commenced with three high schools in Tegal Regency: SMAN 1 Slawi, SMAN 2 Slawi, and SMAN 3 Slawi. The meeting involved representatives from each school, the Statistics Go To School team, and Polstat STIS interns.

This meeting breathes fresh air into the field of statistics in Tegal Regency. Notably, it covered essential BPS programs, including those previously implemented in schools, such as “Pojok Statistik” (Statistics Corner), “Layanan Pojok Statistik” (Statistics Corner Services), and “Agen Statistik” (Statistics Agents). Through Statistics Go To School, the gaps in students’ statistical knowledge are being addressed. Beyond enhancing literacy and understanding of BPS programs and their outcomes, students gain insights into the background and operational methods of the Central Statistics Agency directly from BPS representatives.

Statistics Go To School involves BPS visiting schools almost every week, aiming to raise awareness among high school students about the importance of data. By understanding BPS’s role as a provider of quality statistical data, students can better utilize statistical information. The hope is that high school students will contribute to specific statistical initiatives within their school environment by creating scientific papers or other innovative projects.
